What is the best way to achieve the following regarding logins.

1. email addresses need to be verified.

2. we will manage user registrations internally

3. don't want the ability to register (ie remove the word) from public facing pages)

if you want registration with automatic email verification AND manual review of registrants, I suggest using a dedicated "members" role besides "registered users". You would reserve all private content to the "members" role and use "registered users" just for general information, same as unauthenticated users.

in this case I think that Sebastian's proposal makes sense. You can use the "normal" registration process, and verify the email by the appropriate setting. As soon as they have logged in for the first time (and therefore verified their email address) you can assign them manually to an extra group (e.g. "Members"), and aloow only this role to access specific pages.
