We've been having a problem with the app pool for a DNN host dying which of course brings down all the sites associated with it.  This error is showing up multiple times in the application log for the server related to that host.  The host is running 8.3. Please advise ... any ideas on what this means?

please make sure, there is no process interfering with file access (like virus scan, backup) and permissions are granted properly for the ASP.Net account configured in advanced settings of your IIS application pool.

Thanks for the tip Sebastian, .net account permissions are good - we've been looking into the conflicting processes possibility
