Hello,

I tried to upgrade my test server from 7.2.2 directly to 8.0.4.

The upgrade went smooth with no errors at all however the site is mostly empty from all modules.

All is left is the page header, menu bar and the right pane, thus I can't access the site because the login module doesn't show.

If I inspect the page I see my contentpane div empty of all the elements that should be enclosed. Also note that browser's console also does not show any error.

I know I may go back to 7.2.2 and do the upgrade step by step, however I would appreciate if someone can tell me what can be wrong with my skin that didn't pass the upgrade. (I assume the problem is there).

For information my site is quite old and is based on skins created with version 3.

 Thanks,

OrenG

Oren,

there were some breaking changes in DNN 8.0 - if the skins don't work I would guess this is due to the fact that SolPart is not supported any longer, but there has been a change in some namespace as well therefore it is not guaranteed that all - esp. third party - modules work as expected.

There is no risk updationg DNN 7.2.2 to the latest 7.x.x version (I think it is 7.4.2, and you get some security issues fixed with that), but to upgrade to 8.0.x you should test all extensions (skins, modules, providers...) you use whether they work or not, look for updated versions, alternatives etc. This means some work, but it should be worth.

Happy DNNing!

Thank you Michael for your detail answer.

So I'll first upgrade to latest 7.xx version to improve security.

However is there any documented guideline for upgrading from 7 to 8 or at least a list of main changes  that should be addressed.

To me namespace and esp mean nothing so I don't really know where to start from and how to do it without rewriting the whole site.

 Thanks,

OrenG

DNN 8.0.0 release notes contain a list of changes, mainly default.css has been modified and due to modified namespaces, most of the DNN 7 modules will require an upgrade as well.
