Does anyone know the pros/cons of YAF (Yet Another Forum) vs. Active Forums?

Just wondering what the compare/contrast of those two would be.

Any insight on either module is appreciated.

No idea!

(But, history will record that I found DotNetNuke some 10 years ago while working with YAF. At that time, Active Forums was, IMHO, clearly superior to YAF and had a world class development and support team. I'm still here ...)

Great point, Joe. It would be interesting to know if anyone still feels that way about the "core" Forums module, despite its lack of updates.

While creating the migration script from AF to YAF.Net, I had a look at the data structure of both.
While the model of YAF.Net is cleaner and makes better use of SQL (with better performance), and Ingo did a great Job of creating an integration layer for the YAF.Net forum to DNN, it is still obvious that YAF.Net for DNN is mounting a separate application to DNN (e.g. by duplicating users and profiles), while AF is a module built on top of DNN - unfortunately with a couple of issues in SQL and the problem of the volunteer team to catch up with latest changes in DNN Core framework.

I've been running YAF.Net with DNN for several years now. Users cannot perceive that it isn't a typical DNN module if implemented properly, but it's darn obvious to admins because as Sebastian says, the user profiles have to be synced between the two, which at times, has given me some grief with various updates over the years. However, the_watcha, who maintains the YAF DNN integration code is reasonably responsive and make corrections where he can.

Truth be told, both forum modules lag significantly behind their non-Microsoft ecosystem competitors in terms of features, function and user experience. I've never understood why Microsoft based open projects can't seem to progress as rapidly as the others, but I sure hope it turns around in the next few years because for the last several I've been tempted to retrain/retool myself and jump ship. We're it not for my 8+ years of experience with IIS, SQL Server, DNN, etc.. I would already be gone. If I were a young man getting started today, in all honesty, I would dismiss DNN and the entire Microsoft ecosystem. Once upon a time, DNN represented game changing innovation. It was cutting edge. Unfortunately that's not been the cased for many years now. Heck, we're just starting to get a UI in DNN 9 that's getting close to what the other camps have had for years. In general, the Microsoft ecosystem (the ecosystem I built my career on) is playing catchup across the board. If you watch Microsoft's marketing videos from the last 2 years, you wouldn't think it, but when you dig in and see what of that talk is actual, it's a sadly different story.
