Here is basically what I am going to try and reproduce.  Is Solpart able to handle this and if not what might be better?

Its not particularly vertically solpart oriented, but you may want to check out this. Its a general article about skinning. However, near the bottom is a listing (exhaustive?) of all the different solpart attribute parameters. It also details the various different modes that you can use for embedding the solpart (control vs [replacement]). I found it helpful...
