I get the following error when using the News Feed in DNN 3.1 (all was fine in the prior 2.x releases):

Could Not Connect To http://p.moreover.com/page?o=rss002&c=Top%20stories. You Should Verify The Source Address Is Valid And That Your Hosting Provider Has Configured Their Proxy Server Settings Correctly.

I also have a problem with the Weather and Cartoon modules, and assume (for the time being) that these problems are related.

Reading the GoDaddy solution posted, I assumed that I needed to set Proxy settings. I asked my host (HostMySite) about this, but they told me that they do not use proxies and that the problem must be something different (though I have also asked them to research further with their own people who may be more familiar with the issue).

I also note that this particular RSS is RSS 2.0. Though I also read about issues regarding RSS versions (mostly to do with HTML code), it does not seem to be involved with my issue per the error message I am getting.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Godaddy run their websites in a medium trust code policy. This only allows for a single designated external location, and will also stop code that uses screenscaping working such as the comics and weather. Theres a new document with 3.0.10 in the documentation folder called "DotNetNuke Code Access Security.doc" that explains this, and some mechanisms you can use to try to access external resources such as feeds..

Thanks for the feedback, Cathal. However, I do not use GoDaddy. I use HostMySite (who have been great with DotNetNuke - well, maybe up till now - we'll see). Nevertheless I will discuss the issues you brought up with HostMySite and see if this is indeed the case and if they can resolve it.

In the meanwhile, if anyone else has another insight, I'd appreciate hearing about it.

Thanks again for the help. You hit the nail on the head. In my case with HostMySite, I only needed to change my web.config file to:

<trust level="High"...   (was set to "Medium")

In a nutshell for those after me stumbling into this:

- Non-Local Web services (including the News Feeds module) need a Trust Level of at least "High".

- If not constrained by the host (see below), set the Trust Level to High in the web.config file (located in the root, such as www.myportal.com/):

<trust level="High"...   (was set to "Medium")

Once this configuration change is recognized, non-local web services will no longer be blocked unless restricted at a higher level, as follows.

- The machine.config file, located at:

systemroot\Microsoft.NET\Framework\versionNumber\CONFIG

where versionNumber is the asp.net version number (v1.1.4322 is the version for asp.net 1.1),

sets the initial Trust Level and can disallow level overrides, such as:

<trust level="Medium" allowOveride="false" ...

In the case, you want to either change the level to High or allowOveride to true.

However, you may not have access to, or be allowed to change this restriction (especially in some shared host environments).

In this case, reference DNN's Code Access Security documentation for settings to allow access to one or more explicit non-local URIs for web services. Then discuss with your host (who "should" be willing to allow access to "reasonable" resources).

Thanks for the information here. I do host at GoDaddy and I wonder if I can just apply the same as you have done here.

I will update with my results.
