Oh ... BEFORE starting the install, change the connection string to point at that empty DB. I think you then just click OK in the install screens.

After a lot of research and learning about SQL Express I was finally successful.
I ran the DNN install wizard and after many attempts, was finally able to get the cxn string correct, the SQL authentication properties correct and a user that has access.
The site is now up and running again, this time with the db in sql and not a file in the App_Data folder.
So now I'll wait and see how things go tomorrow.

I always prefer attached databases over user instance databases (using database.mdf file name in the connection string), because you may easily access the database using SSMS or another tool without interfering with DNN.
