Please keep in mind that any DNN upgrade that changes this table and/or procedures could change your changes or fail - so you should document it, change back before the update and redo the changes after the update if necessary (which could also truncate your value again).

...yes, I am going to leave it as-is, and they will just have to limit the number of file types we support, there is already A LOT of room for many file types, and so that is going to have to be good enough for now (GEFN) until we can get the site updated from Version 8.0.3 to the latest version of DotNetNuke...
...at this point, I think the only thing that I would add, for any developer actually working on the DotNetNuke product itself, it might be a good idea to test this in the latest-and-greatest version and if it exists there then add it to the TODO list...
