Hi, If I use session vars in module that is placed on a page that required user authentication, will I get an error (e.g. session variable does not exist)  when it times out or will DNN know that the session has timed out and ask the user to log back in?

Regards

no, dotnetnuke does not use session variables so will not know to force a log out when a session expires. DNN uses forms authentication to control authenticated users, and utilises encrypted cookies with a timeout -once that timeout expires you are automatically redirected to the login page. If you have a business case for using session variables you could add code in the global.asax to detect an expiring session and delete the forms cookie.

I use session variables because I find it easier than url processing. It sounds like I need to start using url processing.

Hi Cathal,
Would you please elaborate and where and how 'once that timeout expires you are automatically redirected to the login page' is this done in dotnetnuke.  I am trying to redirect to a page within my portal when user logoff or his/her session has timed-out.  Thanks
