I come from a c# mvc development background and am a bit confused as to how to setup visual studio.. I would like to be able to actually run it from within Visual studio but that doesn't seem to work. The project won't build. Is this not how you are supposed to do it? Pardon me if this is a stupid question..

I have had a hard time doing it too, there is a blog post linked in the git start page to this article https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/libr... which explains it for older versions, but now the project is split into multiple repositories, I hope they can update those instructions

If memory serves me good:
You have to clone the following repositories:
https://github.com/dnnsoftware/Dnn.Pl...
https://github.com/dnnsoftware/Dnn.Ad...
https://github.com/dnnsoftware/Dnn.Re...
https://github.com/dnnsoftware/Dnn.Ed...
https://github.com/dnnsoftware/Dnn.Ad...

Then you need to build each project into release mode the move the files generated in the Website folder of each project into the Website folder of the Dnn.Platform project. After that you you need to setup that Website folder as an IIS website and navigate to it to fire up the installation process. Then you can open the project and rebuild it in debug mode to work on it and instead of firing a normal debug you use the Attach to process debug feature, on the website you do your thing and it will stop when you hit a breakpoint in your code.
