Let me explain in more details. My module is saving data in an external database using moduleid as the key. So when user add the module to a page, it should be empty. But sometimes, the user want to take the same content as that module on another page. To do that, he selects the command "Add existing module" and check the box "Make a copy". But to be able to make the copy of content, my module should be called with original moduleid and destination moduleid in order to copy the data in the external database. Otherwise, even if the user checks "Make a copy", he gets an empty module.

I looked at DNN source and found my answer. The option "Make a copy" seems to only copy module settings. So I should be able to take advantage of this and put a value in settings so that my module knows, the first time it gets loaded on a page, that it has to copy data in the external database. Unless of course there's a better way of doing this. For example, do you know how HTML module is handling this? I've looked at its table and the content is copied properly when adding existing module with the option to make a copy.

I guess you may have to look in the HTML module source for your answer.

My memory says that there is an interface to implement which presumably would be called from the DNN API. A few minutes of Googling didn't turn anything up.

Good point. It seems that HTML module is implementing IPortable interface. It's possible then that the copy of existing module exports original module data and import it right after in new module. Will look at this in more detail. Maybe the right way of doing the copy. Thanks for the help.

If you are copying the module, it depends on the module (using export/import interface) to copy the content - otherwise just settings will be copied.
A copy means, any changes will affect the new instance only, otherwise use a reference.
Copy should only be available, if the module supports DNN export/import interface.
