Every now and then I'm tempted to host my sites on my own servers.  I've got a few low traffic sites that seem to do just fine on my server that's connected to my DSL.

I've got a few larger sites that I'd love to host inhouse or my client would like to host them on their servers.

I'd like to know if others are doing their own hosting.  What equipment are you using?  DSL? T1?

What would be the recommended hardware for doing your own hosting?

I've used WH4L and had decent/fair service from them.  Every now and then, some other site will hog all the resources and effect my sites.

I've also thought about a co-location service, but who should I use?  I'd love to find a host in the Atlanta area that I could work with, but can't seem to locate one.  Does anyone have any recommendations?

If you outsource your server, check out Brinkster.  Good price, good support and never had any problems.

Your questions really require very specific information about your site.  Usuage, DNN Version, provider, etc.

It is expensive to host your own site.  Server(s), Software licenses, Internet Connection, Upkeep, it all costs $$$$$$$.

I did this for a while but hosting is pretty cheap these days! Check out threads about using GoDaddy.com and 1and1.com - though if you value your time you might find it worth paying for some service with some technical skills and staff very knowledgable about DNN. I use WebSecureStores but others have been discussed throughout these forums.

If doing it yourself:
- You need a static IP address. If like many DSL users (what I was on) you get a new (dynamic) IP address after every power surge, then you then an dynamic DNS service. A bunch of servers and clients exist for this (I used easyDNS.com and DynSite.com but suspect there are others easily as good) but that costs a fair amount too.
- If you have clients reliant on your site, you better do daily backups, have redundant power, etc., etc.

Good luck!
