OK, Is this thing going to happen or not? We're now officially desperate for a forum. Is there any realistic estimate of a timeline?

I think the policy of not giving release dates or timelines is a good one. A few weeks ago there was a claim that the release would be in the next few days. So many including myself were hanging out for it. Obviously its not ready yet, and it will be released when its ready. I think a good rule of thumb is to not say, and just surprise everyone.

In saying that- I do hope it is soon. I am certainly waiting, and it is certainly a release that is much anticipated by everyone.

Umm, yeah. I hope that was sarcasm.

In case it wasn't, let me tender a friendly postulation: your clientele, no matter where you are or what your line of business is, most likely would categorically disagree with you. Consider exorcising the notion from your business plan, immediately.

Thanks,

Shamus

I use ActiveForums by activemodules.com.  It's been out for a long time, up to v3 now, is stable and well supported.

Thank you!

I'm heading that way now to check it out.

Thanks again,
Shamus

Couldnt disagree more. If you're in business, naturally your job is deliver the functional and other requirements, on time, and on budget. So in that case your would always inform your client of your release dates, and what the releases that would contain.

Yet, the Forums DotNetNuke Sub-project is not running off the commercial paradigms. It does not have a business plan.

It is developed by volunteers over and above their day jobs. Naturally as volunteers they do not have unlimited time to debug, and if problems come up in the dog-fooding process, they are not sure exactly how much time they are going to have to fix the problems. So estimating becomes a problem.

I think the Inner-core team member Scott Willhite put it best at http://forums.asp.net/799324/ShowPost.aspx

Welcome to the community!

It is our policy NOT to give specific release dates. One of the facts of open source is that it is not any of our primary occupations... and so resource allocation can not be guaranteed. We rely heavily on community input in beta testing and so the workload is often hard to predict. Invariably, if we quote a date too far in advance it will either be missed or quality will be sacrificed to meet the deadline. Neither of those alternatives is acceptable to us.

Hey guys, quick update.

The latest version is installed here as of last nite.  I have the release package locked in our vault repository.  I need approval from Shaun and some help to post the release.  It is done and I think it will be posted this evening.

As for the date posting policy or whatever you want to call it.  If I don't give dates the community thinks either the project is dead, or they get frustrated not having any idea what is going on.  If I do get dates they hold everything against me.  This is an absolutely no win situation.  From now on I have decided I will post not only progress of the projects in my blog, but I will also post where we "think" we are and when we "think" we are going to release.  Therefore, I will not be answering any posts regarding release time anymore.  If you want information see the appropriate blog.  I feel this is the best way to deal with it.

This is my official policy for the Forum and Gallery Sub-projects:

Release timelines will be given to the community via the project lead blogs.  (Each project has its own blog and information can be gathered there.)  Nothing is set in stone and all date timelines will be only rough estimates at best.  There will be no more timeframes mentioned in these project forums by myself or any other team members.  If any post is found to be complaining about dates mentioned in the blog, they will be deleted.  (I don't mind hearing "I wish it was coming faster".  I do mind hearing "but the blog said...")

</end policy>

This is nothing against anyone.  This is simply a policy I am putting in place to keep the team motivation high and to keep the community informed as much as possible without promising anyone anything.  It is very discouraging to work on something and see some community members slamming it because it is not happening as fast as they wish it would. At the same time I am sure it is very frustrating to wonder what is going on.  I feel the blogs will also aid in filling this gap.  Let's try and use the forums here for development and end user questions about functionality or code and not use it as a place to flame.  I feel lately that the core teamers and the community have been seperated more than they should be and this needs to stop.  I hope everyone understands where I am coming from and I will be glad to answer any questions here about this policy.

Thanks

Chris Paterra

Hi Chris, and super thanks for the effort you have put into this.
(Even my little remar earlier is fixed J )

The reflection you point out between the "core" and the "others" I have noted as well. This is a little sad and scary for me that live quite close to this product and have found some way of make my living out of it.

Scary as I understand partly from own experience how it feels to start off with enthusiasm and end up liable for timetable and requirements from people that catch up on features spurred on what they see, but lacks understanding that it originally started off as enthusiasm from people like you, that understood and saw the opportunity plus for free started to work and contribute towards speedy improvements. Not encouraging for anyone and wee need the firepeople who keeps this community together. It’s a good machinery and creds to all of you that makes my life easier.

This needs to stop, all of us have to start to thing about our roles, hang arounds, contributors, core or ‘grab and runners’.

I saw in some other thread here somewhere someone talking about gratitude and healing lepra. (Forgot the name of the benefactor.). Remember we contribute in various ways, but negativism I have hard to see that as contribution, constructive criticism maybe.

(Got upset for a sec, but I’m fine now!)

Thanks again Chris! Now let’s see how we can make this to the next step. (I’m still thinking that profiling should be lifted out from the UI of the forum and inserted as plugin at the site “My settings” page.) J
