Hi, all.  I'm running a summer IT camp for 20 bright 10th graders.  We are teaching them DNN and want to have them create a "job board for kids" website in which they link to an existing Access database (managed by a local non-profit charity).

We are very much novices at DNN. Can somebody please provide a step-by-step "how-to" showing how to incorporate an existing Access database into a new DNN project site, create the input form that will write to the Access database, and then pull data from the Access database into a straightforward report?

We really need the coaching and step-by-step advice.  Can some kind DNN soul help us?

Thanks,

Doug Arthur

WOW!!!!

You are biting off a big chunk aren't you?  I assume you are not meaning that you will be writing a custom module to do these kinds of things.  Trying to write custom modules is pretty complicated even when you know asp.net and vb.net.  I assume you don’t have a great deal of time with the kids.

I would only attempt the task using core and 3rd party modules.  You will have to see if you can get a 3rd party forms module that will write to an access database.  I believe the core reports module (DNN 4 only) will allow you to get simple reports from an Access database.  You might be able to get any 3rd party module providers to give them to you for free or at reduced rate.  Check out snowcovered for what you are looking for.  It would help if you were planning this for next year.  It will take you some time to get up to speed and then find the modules you need.

This sounds like an interesting project.  Setting up DNN and building a site may be a good level of complexity to challenge the kids and they can actually succeed in implementing a useful site.

the best way to do this in an educational situation is to use aprogram like MyGeneration to build the database access and the Business level for the access database. Once that is done then you can build the module to display/edit or what ever you require - it also allows you to build a module that will interface to any version of DNN that you might want to use - the access database level is seperate from the DNN data providers etc so it is possible to run a access based module in say DNN3.

You can pickup MyGeneration free off the internet and you should also find templates for dodads that use the access database. This will not teach them about the DNN data providers but as an introduction into coding for DNN the dodad technology is ideal - once they get their modules working using dodads then extend the course into the more some what complex area of DNN data providers - however remember that from version 3 onwards there is no access database providers in DNN. There are MyGeneration templates for true DNN modules however they are all for SQL database.

If you email me and tell me what the schema of the database is I should be able to generate the data base level code for you using MyGeneration - however it is fairly simple to do if you download the software and the relevent dodad templates

John (oziweb)

I could REALLY use your help!  The 1-week program starts next Monday (7/31), and we have to decide in the next day or so if we are going to let the kids actually try to solve the problem and build the link to access (preferred) or stay conceptual and present their solution in PowerPoint only for now.

I have an email of the schema from the non-profit organization out of Access, but I don't know how to send it to you for your review.  Can you give me your direct email address (if that's legal in DNN) or tell me how to attach an email that has a screenshot of the Access database in it to this discussion thread?  As you can tell, I'm not Access or DNN literate yet. Sorry.

Thanks,

Doug

does not give much time however if you can send me the schema I shall see what I can do for you. send it to my general email address baa@oziweb.net.au also can you tell me at what level of programming skills are these kids, what version of DNN have you got Please not version4 - suggest if you are teaching about DNN start them on DNN2.1.2 first (much easier to compile etc and less complex to teach) moving the dnn2 module to dnn3 is fairly easy if you need to do this later. Give me a fairly detail overview of what you want the kids to do please.
