Wanted to get some ideas with how others are using DNN with multiple sites. It seems one of DNN major strengths is in multiple portals per instance but we're finding some negatives as well.

  • Users must be unique across all portals in a single instance because of asp.net membership.
  • Specific modules that one portal uses may restrict upgrading DNN if not compatible.
  • Possibilty of bringing down all portals when making upgrades or changes.
  • etc

So I was wondering what others do. We are a hosting and development shop so have a lot of DNN site clients. I would also not want to have a separate instance and separate sql database for each site because of the overhead. I was thinking a compromize might be to make each site a separate instace but use the object qualifiers so that a SQL database can be shared across sites while allowing for site specific upgrades. Thoughts.
