Hi, I'm working with a 2.x version of dnn. I want to install the skins to my website. The skins that have files ending in acsx works fine; but the skins ending in .html does not even show up. I read the documentation and it said to install the skin through the host. So I logged in as host and cannot find the 'Skin' tab anywhere. I'm really stuck. Thanks for any help

Because you're using such an old version of DNN, you run the risk of uploading a skin that won't work. However, if you're pretty sure the skin is suitable then carry on. It certainly won't damage anything.

Another issue is that skin developers don't always follow good form when packaging their skins. Check for zips inside of zips and look for a zip that hopefully contains a couple of folders called Skins and Containers. That is the zip you will upload. When I first started in DNN on 2.1.2 I only found out through trial and error that everything from modules to skins and containers is just a huge mess... just bear with it and try and look for reputable skins and modules. I recall finding skins and modules spread all over the server because of incorrectly made zips.

There is a Skins menu item on both the Admin and the Host menus. You can upload most html-based skins to either. A Skin and a Skin plus Containers zip are both uploaded using the Upload Skins menu that pops up when you hover on the little triangle on the skins page (all highly intuitive heheh). whereas a zip with just containers goes into the Upload Container section off the same menu. I'm pretty sure I recall this right.

If the folders in the zip are all correct and have the proper files in them, then after upload, any html files present will be processed by DNN into equivalent ascx files. Those will then appear on your skins listing. Clicking the "Parse Package" link on the skins page actually re-does this processing again for you on the server. You can use that if you have made any changes to the html files whilst they are on there. Watch the parse process to see that it doesn't produce any error messages in red.

The point is: DNN skins itself using the ascx files. These are created from the html files (if present) upon uploading or upon manually parsing the skin if already uploaded.

Have a further fiddle and come back here when you get stuck again. It's a nightmare to figure out.

To be more precise: As long as the developer does not use recently added skin objects, DNN3 and DNN4 skins in HTML should work fine, while ASCX versions could fail due to namespace reorganisation, that took place between DNN 2 and 3. HTML skins get compiled during upload, creating the appropriate ASCX files.

The menu item "Skins" has been added in DNN 3 and is not available in DNN 2, but in all versions since DNN2 there are another places where you can upload skin and container packages: in "Host Settings" for all portals or in "Portal Settings" for the current portal only. There is only the preview missing and the option to reparse a skin.

The most common reason for skins not to appear in any installation is how they have been zipped in the first place. You need to be in the folder of the skins and add to zip so the zip file has the skins directly in them.

If you are outside the folder, it will create folder in a folder zipped file - and while it will be uploaded, it will not display since the files are not able to be accessed directly.

Have you checked this is the case. Html, htm makes no difference, the fact you cannot see them is perhaps you zipped them the wrong way in the first place.

The other problem is when people create skins and forget to put in a content pane.. But I would check the folder first and see it's correctly packaged.

By the way - these guys have given some good explanations and if it was correctly packaged and incorrectly named - eg. if you are using a dnn 3 skin and an ascx file you will come up with an error since there was a change in the name space, but it would come up with an error, not come up with nothing.

Nothing normally means not correctly packaged.
