I've blogged about some of the new changes wrt. to the Product Licensing and Smart-Thinker modules -

"In most other industries, software and components are sold with volume licenses, or per seat, developer or server. This concept has not really taken off in the commercial DotNetNuke module world, although curiously I have seen many skins that come with a “Single Portal” restriction. Most modules are sold with very laid-back licenses and few restrictions, although recently I have seen “Single Server” licenses (i.e. one DNN Installation) and a few other variants. I do, however, think that the Portal License is the best way forward and the most fair…"

I'd really like to get some feedback from other module developers so I thought I would start a thread here to see how others felt about volume licensing and the various ways to ensure module developers receive the compensation they are due.

Please have a read of this and let me know your opinion. I'd really like to get a good debate going on this - I think this area needs some tightning up...

I never thought of that -- checking how many portals the module is being used on as a way of licensing -- very easy to do.

Hope I'm not straying off topic, but my only thoughts are that I very rarely have more than one portal per DNN install. I guess a lot of us do, but this is a bad idea because:

1. They cannot be moved or separated, at least not easily.
2. If one DNN goes bad, it affects all clients.
3. All clients are on the same app pool, if it crashes, everyone does.
4. Too many modules installed in one portal slows it down.
5. More content - larger databases, larger tables slow data access down.

It's really dangerous -- it's putting all your eggs in one basket. It's bad enough that you'd host all your clients on one server. It's all about diversifying your risk. If you are a web designer, you don't want to lose clients because of your hosting situation!

My comments are coming from 2 different perspectives, developer & system administrator.  The system administrator, in an Intranet environment, will usually be the "host" for most installations.  The reason being is if a server is running on the network the system administrator is responsible for all hardware/software/security, etc.

As a system administrator, licensing needs to make my job easier when I need to get approval for a purchase.  It cannot be complicated to explain.  It needs to be flexible allow for real world situations such as development servers, local installs, etc.  I also am not referring to a $25.00 module that comes with free lifetime updates until the planet explodes.

LICENSING - Non-Hosting
Single Server
- Permits module use on a single server without limit to number of portals.
Permits use on a development/proof of concept server.

This license is intended for an Intranet site or company site where the number of portals are all related to the same company and used by the same set of users or customers.

LICENSING - Hosting
Single Server - Permits module use on a single server without limit to the number of portals.
The cost of this license would be 10, 20 or xx times the cost of a non-hosting license.

LICENSING - Single Portal
Single Portal -
This license will cover the majority of single site users with a small number of users.

These are just some initial thoughts.  There needs to be a substantial difference in licensing for a hosting company.
