OK, I'm new to DNN and new to Windows Server as well.  I have a dedicated server from 1and1 which seems to be working OK.   I set up a domain, created a website in IIS and uploaded a simple ASP.NET test application which uses SQL Server.   It worked fine so I deleted it and unzipped DNN into the same folder.   I edited the connection strings in web.config to look like this:

connectionString="Data Source=.\S12345678;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|\Database.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True"

which is copied from the string which worked in the previous test application (S12345678 is the name of SQL Server).

I switch to my local browser and navigate to the domain...

Error Installing DotNetNuke

Current Assembly Version: 04.03.04

ERROR: Could not connect to database specified in connectionString for SqlDataProvider

I then installed SQLEXPRESS on the server and tried the default connection string for that.  Same result.

Then I installed Visual Web Developer Express on the server and created a new DNN from the template.   Hit CTRL-F5 and it installs happily, a few little glitches and then it's running on localhost on my server.

I switch to my local browser and navigate to the domain...

Error Installing DotNetNuke

Current Assembly Version: 04.03.04

ERROR: Could not connect to database specified in connectionString for SqlDataProvider

I've tried everything I can think of but as I say, I am new to DNN, ASP.NET and Windows Server.  Can anyone help me out in simlpe language?

Thanks

Paul

Paul,

If you searched for 1and1 in these forums, you probably already found that you're not alone.  My experiences with 1and1 were so frustrating that I left them, as fast as I could!  Their support sucks, and I never could get a DNN installation to work on their servers.

I urge you to run away from 1and1 asap!  They will just give you an ulcer, all the while keeping you on hold, and collecting your money.  If you're still covered by their "Satisfaction Guarantee", tell them so--by phone, email, and most importantly by certified letter.  Cancellations require notice in writing.

I also tried Brinkster.  They have problems with DNN, too.  You'll find many forum threads regarding spontaneous logouts on Brinkster.  No solutions put forth have solved that irritating problem.  I'm convinced that the problem has to do with their server configuration.  I cancelled my account there, again before my "Satisfaction guarantee" expired.

I've been with WebHost4Life (WH4L) for a year now.  Their support is excellent, and they seem to be way more knowlegible with DNN, than 1and1 and Brinkster.  They've quickly resolved any issues I've encountered, and happily answered any other questions I've thrown at them.

I say, don't beat yourself up trying to run DNN on 1and1.  Cut & run!

Rick

Try SQL Authentication.  Create a dnnuser account and password and change the connection string to reflect that

The way it's setup now, you'd need to give NT AUTHORITY/NETWORK SERVICE (or whatever account ASPNET is running under) permissions to the dnn database.  If you have full control of that web server, you should be able to use SQL Management Studio to grant those permissions.  I'm not 100% positive if this is a correct solution for you since we always create a specific windows domain account for the application pool in which the web application, like dnn, runs under in Windows Server 2003.

It's obviously not a 1and1 problem, they just supply the server and I have full control over it.   It's because I don't yet understand how to set the server up.   Since I can run DNN on localhost on the server, it's obviously something to do with IIS or SQL server, permissions or something like that.

If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate it.

Paul

Also, try a connection string like this one:

<add name="SiteSqlServer" connectionString="Data Source=.\SQLExpress;Integrated Security=True;Database=DotNetNuke;" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

Check this out:

This is from my experience this evening with 4.3.4.  I doubt it's DNN's issue; it's most likely a Windows-related issue.
