Folks,

I just saw the Mono guys have rolled out a VMWare appliance.  I'm a strong advocate of DNN and use it on several projects, and love the fact that there are no cost options for the DB and dev environment.  Theoretically Mono and Linux provide no cost option for the OS, but in practice this isn't readily available.  Upon seeing the Mono VMWare appliance it occurred to me (as it probably has others) this would be a great way to provide a no cost deployable environment for DNN.  The complexities of getting DNN running on Linux/Mono would be significantly reduced via VMWare deployment and provide and immediate operating capability.  Checkout VMWare's virtual appliance directory to get an idea how other open source efforts are leveraging this technology.

Thoughts?

Bill

The problems with Mono is the same with Wine; you have 95% of everything you need, but you always need that extra 5% that you're missing with the real thing. Also, both projects never get to a point of stability. They are always in beta. In other words, it isn't really a stable platform for DotNetNuke, especially when we talk about hosting websites for clients (100% uptime, no wierd error messages, etc)

That being said, I'd love to try it in a test environment and see how it goes. If it runs well for me or someone else for a while, then we can give it a whirl out in the open.

Thx for pointing out that appliance. I've been struggling to get MonoDevelop running. It's even running my favorite distro SUSE  I am downloading the torrent already

I don't think DNN will be capable of running on Apache/Mono any time soon. And I personally believe a fork of DNN to tun on Apache/Mono  would be a much beter idea then struggling to make DNN platform independend. I want DNN to tie as deep into IIS/windows as possible, as would it be a great Idea to tie a fork deep into Apache/Linux
