I'm in full agreement with both of the above posters, i'm a bit shocked at how non-compliant DNN is (my vaildator is showing 126 errors on a default portal) and how few resources there are for designers working on skins.

Is there a good tutorial for creating containers anywhere?

I am looking at updating the tutorial on my site at www.obrienit.se to cover the latest versions  -  but there really hasn't been that much interest in the topic. (Big thanks to the person that made a donation! Cheers Edward!)

I really enjoyed reading your tutorial. After reading it, i went ahead and applied your methods to a DNN 3.2.2 install, and then tryed a 4.0.2 install. I learned a bit in the process, and got more familiar with proper xhtml usage.

I was thinking of re-doing my site utilizing what i learned from your tutorial, and the ton of threads about the subject, both here and other xhtml and css related sites, and saw that we were looking at a major DNN upgrade 3.3 / 4.3 and decided it would be best to wait and try on the new DNN instead. Also, there was some mention that DNN framework itself may try to implement some of the simpler issues that we face towards becoming xhtml compliant.

One of the problems i ran into was changing the default.aspx file with proper closing tags. On some DNN versions, it would not render them, so i thought i will try again on the next dnn version.

This is a blog post from Cathal Connolly on this topic.

I haven't seen any additional movement on this but perhaps those interested in it should voice their support and need as a comment to the blog? I'm not sure how else to vote for features.
I'm going to check out the obrienit.se tutorial now.

Cool, thanks.

I think I'll stick with the solution above for the moment.  I don't know what the side effects might be if I change a core control to output a
rather than a .  Hopefully this would be minimal but it's hard to predict (for me at least).

I went through the DNNLabelEdit source code, but I could not find anything that tells to wrap the text with <span> tag.

Is there anyone make this changes? Can you please shed me with some light.

I think thsi is because a dnnlabel inherits from a normal label control and by default this renders in a span tag.

I have opted for a new contol dnnliteral so you can do stuff like

<dnnliteral: tag="h1"   -- > for module title

<dnnliteral: tag="span" --> for inline elements

etc.

Also for xhtml compliancy you can use a different editor ( i use RADEditor myself ) but there are other that dont mess with the inputted code. With radeditor you ca tell the code to always be xhtml. Also an option is to edit in firefox since al wysywig editors use mshtml which gets screwed by ie in combination with xhtml

You can do css skins with ddn they just take some more time

Ofcourse there are validation errors but most are due to dnn

- wrong insertion of contentpanes

- uppercase tag insertion
