Hi Ducki,

I'm going to assume that this isn't simply flame-bait, and you're serious. If you're having all these problems with DNN, why do you want to be sold on it? Move on, find something that works for you. Life's too short.

Like most FOSS project, the developers are volunteers. They don't owe anyone anything, particularly explanations. There is a vibrant commercial ecosystem around DNN, hire one of the experts to install it and support for you.

As for the problems you're having, have you submitted any issue reports? Have you sent in any patches?

And finally, not to nitpick, it's not GPL (I assume that's what you meant when you said 'GNU', since the GNU project does not produce Firefox, Linux (despite what RMS think) or PHP), it's BSD licenced. That's the main selling point for me.

Marius, a few thoughts for you...

Your assumption is correct, I'm very serious. In my experience, flame-bait generally starts with someone saying something to incite the wrath of the readers. Conversely, I'm trying to get at the heart of why people have chosen DNN, whether it will work for me and how much trouble it will be.

Because I'm looking for a really good solution, not just any solution. Lots of things will work but I learned an important lesson in life watching my mother hammer nails into a wall with the heal of her shoe -- some tools are better than others and it's generally a good idea to choose the right/best tool for the job.

I've considered hiring an expert, thanks for backing up that thought. Now, how to go about finding the best one. See my delimna? I'm always looking for the best. It seems every time I go to a DNN developer site they suck. If you know of some good ones, please point them out to me.

Lastly, on the licensing issues, the finer points on those are lost on me. Either I have to pay for it or I don't. How many people can really sit down and discuss the differences between GPL and BSD? Okay, you can

I'm going to start a new thread which is quite more specific and maybe that will help.

DotNetNuke is a framework I came across after finishing up four big projects. Each project was very similar, and included:

1. membership system with role-based security
2. template based design
3. e-commerce

These are all very time consuming to create yourself. I used VB and VB.NET 1.1. Of course, after you finish one, you can reuse a lot of code, and you get a little better and faster at it for each new project.

But I'm also always looking for faster and better ways... so after looking at a few systems, I came to DNN and realized a lot of features came out of the box already... nice... but it actually took me a couple months later when I wrote my first DNN module and realized the REAL potential -- everything I was writing from scratch is already done, and all I need to do is start writing user controls! DNN even gives you a TON of methods and properties to make things go even quicker. You don't even need to write an SMTP mailer.

Lately, I've also been using DNN for simple websites too, because skinning has become really easy for me. It takes about the same amount of time to create a DNN skin as it does a Dreamweaver template. But it's also much easier to add pages -- no need to edit the menu.

Ducki, it sounds like you are really looking to hire a web developer, rather than doing it all yourself. Some of your comments lead me to think you're tired of programming period. DNN may make things easier for the developer if it handles your task at hand.

All I can say is that there are many,many people just like you that are using DotNetNuke and satisfied with it.  But based on your other comments I agree with others that you would best be served by finding someone that can sell you on what they can guarantee you based on them using DotnetNuke to deliver on your needs.

It sounds like you want to purchase a software package, with maintenance, and a guarantee, but DotNetNuke is not for sale directly from the distributor.

You may find some of those resellers in this forum, but that is not the purpose of this forum, so I think you would be much better served by contacting some of the resellers and asking the same question.

Hi Ducki,

Don't sell short the value of testing and bug reporting. Good bug reports are crucial to tracking down some persistant but subtle problems. Gemini is chock-full of issues in the "Cannot Reproduce" status. Until the developers are able to duplicate the problems, the bugs will remain in the source tree.
