Hi

I am a DNN newbie, and I am having a lot of trouble getting the look right for DnnMenu (I also tried with Solpart menu)

I have downloaded some sample skins from sites (Thank you very much to all of you who allow us to learn from your work) and modified them to learn and get the look I am after.

I have decided to use the DNNMenu and to place right and left seperators and a background image to create the effect of buttions - I have used a sample tabs skin and nina's DnnMenu skin for ideas.

I am having a lot of trouble finding actual documentation for menus. I have read many posts that point me to the documentation downloads area eg:"Version 4.3.3 there you can find in the documentation (DotNetNuke Skinning.pdf file) the different attributes for the solpartmenu. (page 54 = page 58 of the .pdf document)"

also eg "Version 4.3.3 there you can find in the DotNetNuke WebControls.pdf file the different attributes for the DNNmenu. (page 14 = page 18 of the .pdf document)."

Well, I have downloaded the documentation from there - the doco version is 4.3.1, and p[ages 14 to 18 of the webcontrols PDF does not give much info at all. The Skinning PDF does give info on attribute for the Solpartmenu - but it is different to DnnMenu

If someone could please point me in the right direction that would be fantastic.

I am using 4.3.4. I want to have buttons, I use ascx and css files (not html). I am having troubles getting seperators to show, font sizes .....

Thanks

Geoff

That is all the documentation there is for the time being, however, I have created two free skins which use the DNNMenu, it's for registered users to download but you can get an idea on how it's done. It's created in ascx mode.

I have had some problems with the separators as well and not sure if there are some bugs or perhaps I just dont' get it all yet - but I did spend quite some time in trying to work it out.

The download to the skin is HERE and visible when logged in.

You can preview the skin here - http://www.ninasfreeskins.com/xdnnlight/home.aspx  that's where the skins and containers are displayed.

Hi Nina,

I downloaded your new skin with the new dnnmenu.  Is this the Nav skin object or dnnmenu?  I'm very confused about how to identify which.  I know the dnnmenu allows for the old properties along with the new organized ones.  I'm just confused why the menu is id'ed as Nav and registered as Nav.  Also, I got  a seperate sub menu to show only the child pages but I used the level attribute and set it to child.  Is this an indicator of which menu I'm using since this is an older property?  I used the start tab id and expand attributes to set the root on the main menu but have no idea if I should be setting the 2nd sub menu with these same settings. I tried changing the start tab id and expand attributes for the seperate sub menu but the menu either disappears or returns an error.  I'm looking for help and have posted this elsewhere but the thread seems to have dried up.  I noticed the skin has been dowloaded 500+ so I hope others will begin sharing their experience since documentation is scant and examples are few.

Hi Packrat

Sorry for not responding to your post earlier - this last month or so has been very difficult for me in the world of DNN!! (Not on my own it seems after reading a few posts)

I had a look at the documentation provided with the controls and it doesn't have any new classes that control the root level, so it's possible they share some common elements in areas like that.

I did struggle somewhat with the sub menu behaviour, so in the free skin that was all I felt confident in providing since I dind't want to open up a can of worms in an area I'm also still learning and working with.

From my understanding the DNNMenu is in fact the new set of controls using the nav.ascx and is in fact different to the solpartmenu.ascx functionality. There may be some elements of the js that are used, but the controls are different in how they work. Also I think it was the start of true menu separation allowing for easier third party menu options, which has been a something planned for a while.

There are not alot of sites using this menu - I think we haven't quite flushed out all the bugs that run with it. Having said that, I will have more information in the very near future as we work on the documentation further and provide some examples.

But I was under the impression that the menu was in fact not related at all to the solpart menu, however, some functions that require true/false and root, child, same, parent or 0 levels would be the same by nature of what they are.

Sorry I can't be clearer, I'm also running behind in my work at the moment and it's been a challenging couple of months. I will make every effort to get more clear information online with some examples as soon as humanly possible.

Thanks and thankyou for taking the time to comment and ask questions, it helps me work out what I need to be looking out for.

Hopefully some of the confusion surrounding your first few questions can be cleared up by reading this thread.  Specifically the links to the documents and the discussion on the difference in skin objects and their properties
