I would start copying one off the standard skins to a new folder and start from there.
Did you download and read the skinning guide?

Thanks alot for your input. Cheers for the Dnn Creative website. There is a lot of information there! I have read the skinning guide as above, that sounds like a good idea to copy and modify. Does anyone out there know if there is a site that breaks down the use of the skin files and CSS files, which ones are being used where and what they are affecting on the page? The DNN hierarchy is quite complex and it seems there are CSS files and skin files all over the place. Thanks for your time! Brad

The skin folders do not contain one skin but a collection of skins, the same for the containers.

Example: a Skin folder containing myskin.ascx

myskin.htm is the HTML version of the skin.
myskin.ascx is the actual skin DNN creates from the myskin.htm file

Below the CSS files that influence the skin (in load order):

File Loads Location
default.css For all portals on this installation of DNN /Portals/_default/
skin.cssFor all the skins (*.ascx) in this skin folder/Portals/_default/Skins/"skinfolder"
myskin.cssOnly for myskin.ascx/Portals/_default/Skins/"skinfolder"
container.css
For all containers in this container folder
/Portals/_default/Containers/"containerfolder"
mycontainer.css
For the mycontainer.ascx container
/Portals/_default/Containers/"containerfolder"
portal.css For this portal
/Portals/"portalnr"/portal.css
