Rethink what you are doing: Why do you want to use the reporting module? UDT has its own reporting engine: XSL.

I need to provide theend user with filtering capabilities which UDT does not support right now.

I think I read somewhere that 3.3.7 will support both filtering and searching on a per column basis, showing a textbox for the user to type the filtering criteria... now I do not see it on the road map... maybe I was day-dreaming. :)

You can filter using xsl even now.

No, you were not day-dreaming. Filtering is still part of the release. Search was ready and worked, but it was too simple. It has been removed again as it was not so user-friendly as expected. It will be modified and is going to be into the 3.3.8 release again.

Implementing paging is pretty difficult with XSL.  Have anyone ever done it?

Is there any documentation on how to do this in V3.4.0 of UDT?  There is not a lot in the manual...
