I've tried to install DNN on my ISP, DiscountASP.net, and received the following error:

Object reference not set to an instance of an object

With the following stack trace:

[NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.]
   DotNetNuke.Entities.Portals.PortalSettings.GetPortalSettings(Int32 TabId, PortalAliasInfo objPortalAliasInfo) +125
   DotNetNuke.Entities.Portals.PortalSettings..ctor(Int32 tabId, PortalAliasInfo objPortalAliasInfo) +83
   DotNetNuke.HttpModules.UrlRewriteModule.OnBeginRequest(Object s, EventArgs e) +5768
   System.Web.SyncEventExecutionStep.System.Web.HttpApplication.IExecutionStep.Execute() +92
   System.Web.HttpApplication.ExecuteStep(IExecutionStep step, Boolean& completedSynchronously) +64

I remember reading about a permission problem could be the cause.  Can anyone confirm?  If so, what permissions do I need the ISP to set?

Thanks,
Mike

I get this same error on GoDaddy. Prior I had gotten an error about portal 0 already defined and continued then got this error. I copied my files from my local install and then updated web.config and got the installation complete message.

Suggestions?

Thanks,

Dave

hey,

I am hosting 2 sites on discountasp.net my site is www.skmtech.com/portal01 works like a charm.

Lets see. Check list.
Did you do all of these on this page How do I install DotNetNuke 4.x on DiscountASP.NET servers? http://kb.discountasp.net/article.aspx?id=10382

At what stage do you get this error ? right on the very first time, when you are trying to install ?
This stack trace dosen't tell me much.
Please explain step-by-step (1 line each) maybe i can help.

  • I created a folder (As mentioned in the above kb) and called it called portal01
  • Then used filezilla ftp to upload my entire contents of the Precompiled folder (Build | Publish Web site... | whatever default path shows up in target location) takes some time ~20 mins on a 6-8mb cable connection
  • Then i rename the App_code folder to _blablabla_App_code or else u will get (error cannot have this folder in precompiled crap)
  • Then i go to control panel in discountasp.net and make this protal01 as a web app (see the kb)
  • Make sure it has asp.net 2.0 (also mentioned in kb)
  • Then i hit my site the veryfirst time http://www.skmtech.com/portal01 and i can see the installing dnn and progress.
  • Also make sure all your sql2005 connections strings are proper (also in your control panel under the big piechart)

let me know if all these make sense or if u need more info.

Regards KM
