Does anyone know how I could run DNN as the same user as my web hosting account, instead of adding the aspnet account to the directory with write permissions? And how?

My host won't respond to my requests  - Internode in Australia FYI

I's possible, but it's a IIS setting, your host should change that.
But then they could also give you write permissions....
If you have these kind op problems and no reponse: move.

It can be done, but on a hosted server they may not want to bother (although they should because it's more secure). Here is are the step I take to create a "Web Worker", which by the way, I do using a windows group, but we'll run through it as a user for your instance.

User
- Create User
- Remove User from the "Users Group"
- Add User to the IIS_WPG group
- Deny User access to Remote assistance, Dial-in and Terminal Services

File Access
- Grant User Full Control of your DNN directory
- Grant User List/Read and Delete access to the 'Windows\Temp' directory

Local Security Policy\User Rights Assignment
-  Add User to 'Access the compute from the network'
-  Add User to 'Adjust Memory Quotes'
-  Add User to 'Bypass Traverese Checking'
-  Add User to 'Deny Log on Locally'
-  Add User to  'Deny Log on through Terminal Serices'
-  Add User to 'Generate Security Audits'
-  Add User to 'Log on as Service'
-  Add User to 'Replace a process level token'

Create Application Pool\Config WebSite
- Create and application pool in IIS Mananger, name it after your user, Set the identity to that of the user you just created.
-In the web site properties of IIS Manager, on the Home Directory tab, change the Application Pool to the newly created one.

That's it...Again, if you create a Web Workers group with the File Access and Local Security assigned, it just a matter of adding users to that group (and just as important, removing them from the users group!), it goes pretty quick.
