It seems so simple to create a child portal, but I'm obviously missing something.  We have set up a test server, it has a public IP.  We can get to dnn fine at http://address/DotNetNuke.  I logged in as the host admin, created a new portal, and gave it an alias of address/newportal.  Isn't that all there is to it?  When we browse there, we get page not found.  I know there is a ton of configuration that can be done on the portals and at the host level, but everything I've read seems to say this is the simple config that should work, out of the box...  (DNN 4.3.4)

Thanks!

If your main site is at http://address/DotNetNuke, then a child portal will be at http://address/DotNetNuke/newportal

The new portal is a subfolder of your main portal.

Ok, just to be safe, I did the following:

1. As host admin, deleted the portal I created.

2. Created a new parent portal

3. Gave the directory a specific name (Portals\seespto)

4. Selected a template and filled out the rest of the obligatory fields

5. Created the portal

6. The Portals\seespto directory was created

7. I go to http://webaddress/seespto (now that this is a parent) OR http:\\webaddress\dotnetnuke\seespto (just in case), and get... This Page Cannot Be Found...

Any suggestions, or tips on what to look at next?

Thanks!

Nina,

I read the post, and downloaded and watched the video, and I'm still missing it!  I hadn't read anywhere else that I needed to use host headers, but maybe I do.  Here is the layout, in brief.

I have a base dnn install, that I can get to right now, at http://ipaddress/dotnetnuke

I created a parent portal and told it to use directory \portals\seespto

I have a domain name seespto.org, that is pointed to ipaddress in it's dns configuration

At this point, I have host headers configured in iis as follows:

ip address    port   host headers

Default      80     "blank"

Default      80     "seespto.org"

Default      80     www.seespto.org

From the DNN server, I cannot browse to http://localhost/seespto, nor can I get to it any other way remotely.  The directory was created.

I'm sure what's wrong here is a simple step, but I'm not seeing it!
