Hi

I want to be able to customise/edit help for each of the modules. How can I do this?

It states under the Enable Module Online:

You can enable or disable the Online Help Action Menu for Modules. If enabled, you will need to provide the Help Url for the module, in the Module Definitions, although this may have been provided by the developer of the module.

I'm probably blind and I can't see where that setting is.

In reality though I'd like to customise the local help for the module, not the online help. But it will be nice to know how to do both I guess (I don't quite understand the advantage between a two tier help system at the moment, and I'm sure I'm not understanding things correctly at the moment).

Maybe I should be looking at the page help module that is available, but I want to edit the existing local help, so I don't know if this is the appropriate solution?

So as you can see I'm pretty confused! can anybody offer any help (oh that word again :) or documentation here?

Cheers and thanks for your help!!!

Alex

Hello Alex,

Sorry, I am getting confused just reading your post - Help ;)

I noticed an "Enable Online Help" option under the Host menu (think it was "Other Settings" - this turns it on and off globally (although should this not be at Portal level? Might have misread).

When you do a module defintion you can specify the developers website in the DNN file - if you drill into a module (and possible into an actual control) you should see that link.

And lastly the local module help can be localised with a languagestring- module.Help??? Can't remember...

Hope that helped ;)

Thanks Rodney! OK I'm less muddled now after your answer.

I think I specifically need to edit the text of any modules local help, by which I mean, on the module itself, select help (I'm not talking about online help anymore).

I've looked at host/languages/language editor and all the options available, but I just can't see any text for any of the modules installed.
Also done a string search (section of help text ) of all the DNN source files and that doesn't work either.

Cheers

Alex

Hello Alex!

I've been developing a DNN-based web portal for the last months.
The other day the client asked for online help for several of our custom modules. So, I sat and looked at the core to see how the help mechanism works.

Well, you only have to go to the resource file for each custom module and add a new entry, with the key "ModuleHelp.Text" and the value being the help text you desire (you can even use html tags, to make it look better). Check the Links module, for instance.

Unfortunately, there is a problem: the Help icon on the corner of the modules is only available for users with Edit Module or Edit Page permissions (I'm not sure wich one of these). This means that the feature is not available for the majority of users!

Anyway, I believe it is possible to change the core DNN and make it available to any user (that will be my next step) :)
Hope I helped.

Best regards,

Ricardo.

Try this.
Host -> Languages -> Language Editor -> Local Resources -> Desktop Modules -> Now you can see folders for all modules installed. An example of how you can proceed.
-> Announcements -> App_LocalResources -> Announcements.ascx -> Modulehelp.Text
Change the text and click Update

Good Luck
