Help please.

My GoDaddy install only partially worked. The database was created but I got errors apparently unzipping the install files. Sure would be nice if DNN install had more diagnostics when it failed to install and was able to recover a partial install. It is getting old deleting and recreating hte database to try again. Is there anyway to force an installation continuation?

My procedure was:

  • follow various directions here in terms of creating the virtual directories w/ appropriate permissions. I have verified that my "install" dir has read, write and web permissions. And that the other dirs have the recommended permissions.
  • upload the unchanged 4.3.5 unzipped install files to the user root (I gave up trying to upload a working local DNN directory tree)
  • created a custom web.config adding my database strings, objectqualifier and customerrors.
  • And since DNN has no root modification permissions:
    • copied siteurls.config to the user root .
    • added an installation date to config.web
    • made sure web.config had the machinekey section

You wrote:

    • How did you upload the files? (ftp, vwd, dw?)  Some who ftp files may lose the connection and therfore lose some key mods or files etc.  Try to use VWD at the least to upload the DNN directory.  It appears that:

    Error: Error configuring Child PortalAccess to the path 'd:\hosting\davekolb1\Portals\0\' is denied.

    Is trying to access something that does not exist.  This is usually where some new mods (gallery) and images are located.  Try looking thru your file manager and see if the "0" folder exists.

    I used SmartFTP which makes sure that all files are uploaded else it retries. I had too many problems w/ IE6 disconnecting that GoDaddy claimed were not theirs and SmartFTP kept on truckin till all queued files were uploaded.

    The "0" subdir is indeed not there but I figured that was because the install failed. The Portals dir had read and write permissions set.

    SOme of this is GoDaddy not having root write permissions for aspnet but a lot of this is poor isntallation and diagnostics on DNN's part I feel. There is room for a lot of improvement for install and maintenance.

    I'll try your suggestion to upload the already unzipped files.

    I ve heard the same with GD also.  We usually install 20 or more DNN sites manually a week and no problems.  Of course its easier with full access on DED Server.  Usually we will have the DNN source folders/files (unzipped) and simply just place it in the website's directory folder and rename the release.config to web.config and update the connection strings there also after manually creating the dbs and usernames.  Once that is done we simply run

    http://www.domain.com/install/install.aspx?mode=install

    98% of the time this works fine.
