Hello guys,

I would like to know if there is any meaningful difference in speed performance between using the DNS ("sql.server.com") or the IP address of the sql-server in the connection string.

If DNS is used, on connection to sql-server a roundtrip to the DNS-server is necessary to find out the IP address of the sql-server, but how often does this happen in DNN? Once per application start? Or are connections constantly closed and new connections opened, which would confirm that the IP address would bring better performances.

Thanks for any help!

Regards,

Fabian

DNS clients and servers alike cache resource records--so the impact is MINIMAL.  Zones (domains) carry a Time-To-Live value, which specifices how long a record may be cached.  In a fairly static zone, this may be several hours or even days.  In a more dynamic zone, it may only be one hour.  So even at (reasonable) worst, the DNS query will be infrequent--and commonly VERY infrequent!  And even when DNS queries do occur, they're usually answered in just a couple of seconds....two seconds an hour is not much delay at all...
