Something else that I would like some information on, and I swear I had seen a thread on this before but can't seem to find it now, is why does DNN load so slowly after no one accessing the site for just even a few minutes?  Mainly, if no one has accessed my site in the last 10 minutes or so the initial load time takes 3-5 times longer then normal (around 10 seconds or so).  If it has been even longer since some one last accessed the site it can take upwards of 30+ seconds to load the first time.  But then again after loading the first time the site goes very quickly between pages and any updates.  Anyone else seem to experience this or can they point me in the direction of the other thread that I thought had an answer to this?

This is because of IIS and the worker process being cycled down if the application does not have any activity.

The reason it is there is to free up the resources, and on hosts with lots and lots of shared resources they will even recycle apps more aggresively to get as many accounts onto one server as possible.

To get around it (and drive your host crazy), subscribe to a monitoring or keep-alive service.

http://www.host-tracker.com has a free one that works great.

You might also try my free PageBlaster . It won't make the startup after a recycle a lot faster, but it can help because your cached pages will be delivered from disk like a straight html page unstead of having to build it again from the DB.

A combination of "keep alive" and dynamic page output caching with http compression is your best bet for a speedy DNN site.

I am actually on my own virtual dedicated server, would you happen to know how to make these adjustments directly to IIS to avoid this without having to use a monitoring service?  Just wondering.

For W2k3 server In the properties for the App Pool there are settings to recycle based on memory usage, after a certain amount of time, and after a certain amout of idle time.

For W2k server you need to change it in the Machine.config file (processModel node).

So to understand this correct you simply do not want to recycle at all pretty much.  Also I found an option to "Shutdown worker processes after being idle for (time in minutes):" which I am going to turn off as well.  I hope this is right, as running a server in this type of fashion (trying to push performance for certain applications up like this) is not quite my area, at least not yet.  But I guess will be after a little while, lol.  If this is not correct then please let me know what you think would be the best for these options.
