I have created a new page but the navigation menu shows up in the left content pane. Is there a way I could remove this menu?

Yes there is; go to the page settings, expand Advanced Settings, and select 'Hidden', go to the bottom of the page and click 'Update'

That I fear did not work. It indeed removed the child page from the navigation menu but the menu is still in the left content pane and I can not seem to get rid of it. Any other ideas?

I wasnt sure if Skylara was referring to page tabs or the Breadcrumb menu that shows you which page you are viewing.

Interesting thought that.  DNN menu is hierarichical, so the one assumes that the breadcrumb needs to be too and therefore has to show even disabled pages, else it's likely to be confusing for the end user.
