Okay that got usersonline working (why would it be disabled by default?) but my users can still not access the private forums.

security roles:
members

*forum*
restricted access is checked and the security role "members" is in the authorized role field.  What more should I do.  The forum isn't disabled, I can see it with my host account.  But not with my user account.

Same goes for every other module that i try to use.  If I don't set the permissions when I first put the module on the page it rejects any changes made afterwards.

I guess I can just try and readd the modules and hope I don't have to reset any security permissions when I get more users and security roles added to them.
