Re: Text sizing and accessibility factors

How do others deal with the need to allow users to change text size or other values ?
Are there any options apart from Speerio (who's conditions I might not be able to meet in all instances) ?

On a wider note: In the UK we now have an enforceable law called the Disabilities and Discrimination act which can apply to websites. Not sure what the deal is in the rest of the EU - I know there are similar laws / standards in the US.

Given that DNN is often used in a community, organisation or even government context would it not be desirable to have some kind of "Accessibility" feature as part of the framework at some point ?

Thanks

I personally think it's better to leave this to the webbrowser.
Every webbrowser can force the page to be rendered with an other font-size.
People who have this need will set the size by default and I wonder if buttons on websites to change the size are any help to them. To me the setting in the browser seems be a better solution, since it will work for all websites.

Hi Timo
Yes I tend to agree with you - that is certainly the way I do it although it is very easy to stop IE prior to v7 sizing anything.

Of course we both know that there are many internet users who have no idea that they can use the browser to size text.
Also, if you are a publicly funded organisation, it is important to cover at least the more useful of the WC3 accessibility guidelines.

I suppose that all who have this need use the seemingly excellent Speerio (when I can get them working) controls.

I was just a little surprised that there was no other way to do this hence the post.

Thanks

Yes of course you should only use standard compliant HTMl / CSS, no browser hacks etc.

I guess these rules form the W3c stie should be enough...

  1. Images & animations: Use the alt attribute to describe the function of each visual.
  2. Image maps. Use the client-side map and text for hotspots.
  3. Multimedia. Provide captioning and transcripts of audio, and descriptions of video.
  4. Hypertext links. Use text that makes sense when read out of context. For example, avoid "click here."
  5. Page organization. Use headings, lists, and consistent structure. Use CSS for layout and style where possible.
  6. Graphs & charts. Summarize or use the longdesc attribute.
  7. Scripts, applets, & plug-ins. Provide alternative content in case active features are inaccessible or unsupported.
  8. Frames. Use the noframes element and meaningful titles.
  9. Tables. Make line-by-line reading sensible. Summarize.
  10. Check your work. Validate. Use tools, checklist, and guidelines at http://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG

Or do you use some other "rules"...?

Hi Timo

No I don't use other rules - I do whatever the budget and the sites context allows.

My point / question was simply to look for infomation on any other method apart from the Speerio controls to achieve a method of users resizing of text.

I don't have a problem with wc3 guidelines - the question was around any alternatives to the speerio controls which I have been trying to use however I am getting some strange exceptions and the speerio forums return a 404 error.
