We are using DNN for a travel portal, we need to QA our work which will mean different test, pilot and live sites. We were wondering whether there are other companies that are developing DNN to use in exisiting functionality and are QA'ing the releases. We are stuck in the sense that DNN saves URL's and modifications in the database so meaning we have everything pointing at the test enviroment, then when it has been tested we move the environment to pilot. How would we change the settings and make sure the test modifications are in place for the piolt environment. Just was wondering what thoughts you have and how you have maintained this type of development.

Thanks for you help

It is not too complicated to move a DNN installation to a different "home", it just takes a little understanding as to how it works.

First of all there are three main parts of a DNN installation, the DNN framework, the portals folder (within the framework) and the database. The entry point is a portal alias which resolves the actual URL request to a specific portal, or defaults to the portal in host settings. I move DNN around all the time, sometimes two or three times a day. One trick is to keep the three things in unison, or something is guaranteed to break. A second trick is to add the new portal alias before moving the database (otherwise DNN will kick you back to the original installation which can be very confusing).

I am assuming that moving from test to pilot means a different server and not just a different alias (from www.website1.com to www.website2.com not just test.website.com and pilot.website.com). If so, you need to copy the database to the new database server using SQL Management Studio, then simply copy the entire DNN site to it's new location.

Before accessing the URL, modify the web.config with the new database connection string and ensure that IIS knows where your application resides. It should be clear sailing from that point.

If you use ActiveDirectory for authentication it gets a little more involved, in which case you should try to use the actual server where DNN will ultimately be installed.

I hope this is of some help to you.

Hi DjBaldwin

thanks for your reply, these are the following steps i have taken to move the portal, i have copied all the files across and moved the database across, I get a problem in changing the Portal Alias when i cahnge it to point to 172.30.2.1/mywebsite

it keeps on redirecting to it self and doesn't allow the default page to be displayed. I have set up IIS to add a new virtual folder which points to the correct path and named the alias in IIS to 'mywebsite'. the path is c:/foldera/folderb/(all the DDN files). Not sure what i am doing wrong here, thanks for your help in advance.

I'm not quite sure what you mean. When you add a portal alias to one of your DNN portals it is used to decide which portal to display. It doesn't "point to" anything.

it keeps on redirecting to it self and doesn't allow the default page to be displayed.

What happens when you browse to 172.30.2.1?

Sorry I have been away for business but I am back now, yes the problem still occurs, I will go through the steps I have taken,

Firstly I have created a new dotnetnuke installation and created a virtual directory which is the following url

http://localhost/portal

which works fine

I have moved across someone else’s portal which has the same url so I have don’t the following, created a new DB and restored that, changed the webconfig file to point to the new DB which is ok. I have created a new virtual directory http://localhost/portal2 When i browse to this portal it goes the the exisiting portal as the Portal Alias entry in the DB (PortalAlias table) has an entry saying localhost/portal.

If I try changing the entry the page is not displayed, how do I put a new portal that was pointing at a different URL?

Thanks in advance
