OK....one of the 1st things i like to do before getting to deep into development on my dotnetnuke site is being able to move it from one server to another.
Here are the steps i took:
Backuped up the working sites db and restored it on the new server with the same name.
Copied files over and set up IIS and made sure the permissions are mirrored correctly.
Since i have the same db name and log on i would assume teh web.config file doesnt need to be modified??

I try to browse to the new moved site and i get the annoying :

Error Installing DotNetNuke

Current Assembly Version: 04.03.04

ERROR: Could not connect to database specified in connectionString for SqlDataProvider

What am i missing?????

wrong: you should change the name of your dbserver

Also: make sure BEFORE you move the site, to add the domain of the copy site to your portal aliases. Otherwise, dnn will just redirect to your old site....

I will do the portal alisa thing.....
but the question  on the dbserver is currently the web.config is using (local)....on the new location it will have the same sql locally. see below: (i am just in the develpoment stage of my site so to simplify things i used the installer...should i jsut start fresh without the installer?)

<connectionStrings>
    <!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2005 Express -->
    <add name="SiteSqlServer" connectionString="Server=(local);Database=DotNetNuke;Trusted_Connection=True;" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
    <!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2000/2005
    <add
      name="SiteSqlServer"
      connectionString="Server=(local);Database=DotNetNuke;uid=;pwd=;"
      providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
   -->
  </connectionStrings>

Thats why i hate using trusted connections. You have to make sure that the useraccount that is used to run the asp.net workerprocess (as defined in the application pool properties) has the correct acces rights to sql server. It's a lot easier to use mixed mode authentication for the sql server, and set up a specific sql user to connect to your db
