Why not autopopulate the display name with first + last names. Then the site owner could disable the field if they want to and it would be a read only. A final option would be to allow the user to pick from login name, first name + Last initial, or first + Last names, but not let the user actually type in the field. This option could of course default too, so the user can skip right by the field.

Display Name avoids using SQL logic for combination of FirstName + LastName (which improves performance). Having this as part of registration also offers things like the ability for a user to set their own alias in a community.

The real reason for DisplayName is, that there are areas of the world, where the order of prename and surname is inverted, e.g. Japan and China. To allow every user to have his name displayed correctly, DisplayName was introduced. What IMO is missing is a configurable rule to build the it by default from prename and surname (and other parts as adacemic degree, initial character of 2nd surname etc.)

Hi

I've had complaints from users (esp marketeers) about the display name. I've logged this enhancement, what do you think?
