Hi all,

I am going to create an intranet for the compnay that I work for. The user's requirements are:

  • Main Page where users can log in(I would like to use the same log -in as Windows log-in - linked to Active directory maybe if possible).
  • Staff/ Department Section (Operations, Marketing, Finance, IT), explain what each department does
  • Once designed, easy to maintain in house.
  • Social club page, a buy and sell message board.
  • Staff Contact page with photos. This will get the data from MIS database (Management Information System), currently it is on access, but all the data will be uploaded into Microsoft SQL server 2005).
  • Information for New Starters: Places to eat in the area, connected to streetmap.co.uk, maybe or use google API.
  • Links to useful websites.
  • A section for car parking spaces (this will let users know when a car parking space will be free) maybe this can be done through a calendar.

My questions are:

1. Will dot net nuke allow me to do all the above?

2. Do I install source or install files?

Any help much appreciated.

1. yes, you might need to add 3rd party modules for best solution

2. as long as you dont need to have a look at source code - for tweaking or creating your own modules - install is preferable.

I would like to create my own modules, so I guess I have to download the source.

Does MS SQL server 2005 have to run on the same system as dot net nuke?

How do you create you own modules?

Are 3rd pary modules free to download or do you have to pay for them?

Is there a book which shows you how to create modules for dotnetnuke?

Thanks,

you need source version only to read (and understand), how DNN is build.

SQL server can be on a different machine without problems.

for creating your own modules have a look at http://dotnetnuke.adefwebserver.com/DotNetNuke/tabid/195/Default.aspx

there are 3rd party modules for free (see e.g. www.cathal.co.uk)  and commercial ones (see www.snowcovered.com)

For books, there are new ones from core team members, see front page.

Leupold, many thaks for all your help.

I am thinking of installing DNN on my machine and not on the server. This is becaouse I want to fully understand how DNN works and for test purposes. Once I complete the project can i trenafer the dnn system from my machine into the server?

Thanks,
