The metadata file doesn't get cleaned up all of the time when things are removed.  It shouldn't hurt anything--You can just leave the entires there.

As for the images--yes it is similar code that created the ID's for the images as for the albums.  So it is possible that duplicated got created in there also.

Though I must confess I am keen to use it but currently I havent got time to test it even though I have a customer to demo to tommorow - so would appreciate you all testing this one

If you add a second variable and an inner loop, store the generated random number in that variable before looping again then you can check the new value against the old and re generate until the number is different  when you exit the inner loop.
Code like this I have used before for similar sorts of reasons and I must admit it looks a little odd too.
In practice the comparison to the old value can be  enough to kick the random no generator on a digit  but as machines get faster this may no longer be the case
