I'm with Nina here. If you can create child sites there is nothing wrong with your installation. My gues is that your missing something very fundamental in the setup of IIS or the alias.

I know for me, it's the simple things that usually trip me up.

Can you post the process you use from start to finish for us?

Hey guys and girls thanks for the help with this but it comes down to who was the goose; I have to admit it was me.  The problem was that I hadn't set the .NET version of the virtual domain/subdomain to Version 2.  Still with the misleading error its probably worthwhile having this thread up in case anyone else falls into the same trap.
