The File System Auto-Sync option or enable the SynchronizeFileSystem Scheduled task?

Should one of these be used, if so, which one, why... and why isn't it enabled by default? I've searched high and low for no result.

Thanks for any advice on this.

Rob

scheduler job starts a periodic folder sync, while autoSync starts folder sync, whenever a getFolder/GetFile is called. Both are needed only, if files are added/modified, bypassing the DNN file methods (e.g. by uploading files using FTP). Unfortunately the folderSync method has some issues, that shall be solved in DNN 3.3.6/4.3.6, but I have not checked thiy yet.

Thanks for the reply Sebastian,

That brings up a couple of further questions.

I have files being managed by Frontpage, some by FTP, and of course most are uploaded or deleted by various modules. The DNN File Manager is never used unless I need to go and force a file sync manually. I'm of course looking for the most appropriate method to ensure that files are synced and never lost.

Does using the DNN file methods mean, specifically using the DNN File Manager, or does uploading files through a module such as a gallery, forum or repository also qualify as using the DNN file methods?

And, if autosync is only started when a getfolder/getfile is called, how is that triggered by an ftp app?

Thanks for any further info,

Rob

Rob,

using the DNN file methods means any standard DNN file access, using core modules or modules using the same business objects (this is usually recommended!)

GetFolder and GetFile should be used to retrieve a file and is usually used by URL control, which is utilized by most modules to pick a file - i.e. the sync for a single folder is done, when a list of files inside is needed. I am currently not sure, if this covers externally created folders as well. Please notice, that this area will get improvements in DNN 3.3.6/4.3.6, that I have not analysed yet.

Ok, that sounds like I'll wait until I've upgraded to 4.36 and then if it's working fine, enable the auto-sync feature. The main people I need to make sure are covered is portal users who might be using any module to upload files.

Thanks for the further information.
