Greetings

I am a mathematician/engineer/manager/vb.net developer (and MIT graduate).

Over the last six years, I have developed an original application which currently exists as a set of working DotNetNuke modules produced in Visual Web Developer.

Can I have your thoughts on the best way to licence and distribute them?

Kind regards

Geoffrey

One school of thought seems to be to license modules per DNN install. Now one install can have a bunch of portals...

I too would like to here thoughts on licensing.

I license my modules by number of portals they are used on. So 5 DNN installs with one portal is the same prices as one DNN install with 5 portals. The reason I did this is because some people run 1000 portals on one install and thats 1000 websites using an instance of my module for $40, which I did not think was fair.

I had some more thoughts on this very subject in my blog on module licensing.

Hi Rodnet

Yes, thank you for a very interesting reply and a fascinating blog post.

You say “The new Smart-Thinker modules now ship with a License file (an encrypted .LIC file containing the information related to its level). The modules then do a check on the number of portals a module is in use on (Note- this is key – it is NOT the amount of portals you own – it is only the amount of portals you own WHERE the module is used). Another great advantage of this is that we can now ship Trial versions of our modules so that you can try before you buy. Please note that Trial modules are not to be used on live sites but come with a single portal license).”

Can you direct me (and others) to useful online resources on how to do this (for example: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/fe8b1eh9.aspx), or would you be prepared to tell us how we could do the same thing in our modules? I am sure it must be quite a common question.

Kind regards

Geoffrey
