This is what I want to achieve:

  • A repository of files that certain priviledged users can upload to my website, and all users can download.
  • The files are searchable by keyword.  They may be doc, xls files etc.  If they can't be searched on keyword on their contents, I'd settle for searching keywords in a meta-description of them.
  • Each doc has a set of attributes, such as Intended Audience, Publisher Name, etc that the uploader defines.
  • People can choose to view all files, or just ones that meet certain criteria, such as just those intended for audience X, published by Y, etc.
  • Some of the attributes are secret / hidden, i.e. the person who uploads the file can set some "internal" attributes, that only other people with upload rights can see.
  • People who visit the site have certain attributes associated with themselves, such as what Audience they are.  These people can see all the files, but by default they only see ones matching them as an audience.

Can you tell me if these things are possible with DNN please?  I have worked out the I need to use the Repository, and I've installed DNN and got it working.  I've tried addind new attributes to the repository.  But now I am lost.

If this isn't possible, and idea how I can achieve it?  E.g. other tools?  Customizing?

Thanks for your help.

John

Yes if the users belong to an assigned Security Group

Unfortunately they're only searchable by title.

  • Each doc has a set of attributes, such as Intended Audience, Publisher Name, etc that the uploader defines.

You would have to define the attributes and the uploader can choose which one best defines the document.

  • People can choose to view all files, or just ones that meet certain criteria, such as just those intended for audience X, published by Y, etc.

I'd say 75% yes. Without seeing exactly what you're planning I can't give a 100% answer.

  • Some of the attributes are secret / hidden, i.e. the person who uploads the file can set some "internal" attributes, that only other people with upload rights can see.

Ummm, not really. I guess if you had an attribute that wasn't part of the template you could do it that way but then the uploader would only see the attribute when uploading and never any other time.

  • People who visit the site have certain attributes associated with themselves, such as what Audience they are.  These people can see all the files, but by default they only see ones matching them as an audience.

At this point that would be a custom modification to the code as it doesn't do that.

I think that 90% of what your looking for is available out of the box with Document Exchange Pro. I don't work for the author, but I can tell you it is truely a great piece of software. The author will even do custom build to suit specific needs of a client.

Worth you look...
