Hi,

With every release of DNN I find I have to upgrade via trial and error. Shouldn't DNN have proper upgrade instructions in the upgrade zip file?

I'm not quite sure what you mean. I always upgrade using this method:

  • backup db
  • backup files
  • turn off site (and display some message instead so people know i am working on it)
  • copy new files to website
  • make appropriate changes to web.config
  • make sure autoupgrade is set to false in web.config
  • put site back online, dnn will now display a maintenance message
  • browser to  [yoursite]/install/install.aspx?mode=install
  • upgrade process starts
  • after upgrade process ends, visit [yoursite], to enable the web application to start again

This has been my method ever since the early dnn 3 times.....

like i said.. i've been doing this since the early 3.x times.... I'm not sure the documentation is very clear... trial and error are IMO always the best way to establish a routine.... :)... If you only upgrade one site every 2 years, you'd better hire someone with lots of expierence ;)

I have put your instructions up on the wall for future reference.
