Nope. I just back up my web.config (and my database), copy the files from the Install package into my DNN directory, and edit the new web.config.

OK, now I remember: it's editing the web.config file that wigs me out. Do you have to compare, line for line, what's changed, from one web.config to another? Or is it basically, copy/paste in your machine keys from old web.config to new, which works so beautifully with the INSTALL package.

If a problem can be solved, there's no use worrying about it.
If it can't be solved, worrying will do no good.

Nearly the only lines that I update in a web.config are the ones referring to the connection string, and the database. A search through the web.config for (local) will help you find the spots that need to be updated with the database information.

I quote you above only to clarify for any readers after us, that I think you meant "... copy the files from the UPGRADE package..."

Sounds pretty much like you take the same steps as the INSTALL package upgrade requires. Ever since I had trouble with an UPGRADE package upgrade, I stuck with the INSTALL package, even if it meant overwriting files that didn't change since the previous version (INSTALL having it all;UPGRADE having only changes files, I assume). You've given me the confidence to try the UPGRADE package upgrade again. Thank you.
