I have been having repeated failures installing DNN 4.3.6 StarterKit into MS Visual Web Developer 2005.  The first issue I need to resolve is why everytime I run the .vsi file I get this message in a dialog box:

Installation stopped because the directory for the ProjectType value did not exist.  The project type is invalid for your installation of Visual Studio.

The VS Content Installer reports the status of 5 Templates and Starter Kits:

DotNetNuke Web Application

DotNetNuke Compiled Module

DotNetNuke Dynamic Module VB

DotNetNuke Dynamic Module CS

DotNetNuke Skin

All installed OK except the Compiled Module...which has failed on 3 tries.  Does anyone have any ideas as to what this is caused by.  The only thing that I can guess is it has to with the fact that I am installing on VWD 2005 and not the full blown VS 2005.

The system I have is:

Win XP Pro / .NET Framework and SDK 2.0

Visual Web Developer Express 2005

SQL Server 2005 (Standard)

SQL Server 2005 Express

This is only the first of 4 issues I have had

attempting to follow this article: http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Default.aspx?tabid=825&EntryID=453

Any help would be appreciated.  I'll post the others in another thread.

Just found the issue with this.  When you run the StarterKit's .vsi installer and it opens the list of components to install...floating over the Compiled Modules (VB) item indicates that this item requires Visual Studio 2005 to be installed.  This was not clear unless you see the tip displayed when browsing the items in the list. Anyway, simply unchecking the box to install that item avoids the issue if you are using Visual Web Developer 2005 Express and not full VS 2005.

You can also use these methods:

Setting-up Your Development Environment

That will work with these tutorials:

  • Super-Simple Module (DAL+)
  • Super-Fast Super-Easy Module (DAL+)
  • Survey Module Tutorial (C# and VB)

The Starter Kit is SUPPOSED to work with VWD- near as I can tell, THAT is it's intended audience.

I was similarly unsuccesful in installing the 4.3.6 Starter Kit, and gave up... went back to the 4.3.5 arrangement.

I have not tried installing the 4.3.6 version as aDefWebserver suggests, but that strategy worked perfectly in other versions.

The Compiled Module uses the new Web Application Project format. Web Application Projects are not supported in Visual Web Developer. For Visual Web Developer you should ignore the message and create a Dynamic Module.
