I have never completly understood the DNN Licensing structure.

If I deliver a DNN solution for my clients, what are the requirements on my part? How do I address the question if it were to arise of "how can I justify charging for a solution that is derived from an open source project that is essentially free?" Forgive me if this sounds naive on my part. I have read chapter 1 in both the Wrox DNN books on version 3 and version 4 and still am confused. What must I include in the solution? An Icon stating that the solution is "powered by DNN?", the license agreement?, must this be posted on every page? I guess I'm just seeking some clarification here.

hmm.. seems to me the following license text is pretty clear:

' Permission is hereby granted, free of charge, to any person obtaining a copy of this software and associated
' documentation files (the "Software"), to deal in the Software without restriction, including without limitation
' the rights to use, copy, modify, merge, publish, distribute, sublicense, and/or sell copies of the Software, and
' to permit persons to whom the Software is furnished to do so, subject to the following conditions:
'
' The above copyright notice and this permission notice shall be included in all copies or substantial portions
' of the Software.

In other words: you can even sell DNN itself to your clients (although i think you would have to answer some questions if they'd ever found out that you sold them free software ...), all you have to make sure is that the source includes this license text and the copyright notice.

You can turn off all copyright notices in the HTML generated by DNN, in host>settings. It is not necessary to include a "powered by DNN" icon anywhere (although you are allowed to do that of course ;))

IMO this liberal license is one of the reasons we have such a lively market for commercial AND free modules, services, hosting.. etc.

Cheers,

Erik

Thanks to both Bobby and Erik. Yes, while it seems to be pretty clear, I guess it sounds to good to be true. I just want to make sure that I wasn't missing something here. I'm earing that as long as I provide a link to this license text somewhere on the solution, that I'm good to go. And yes, if the question were to arise aboutthe software being "free", I would have to justify this in an appropriate manner.  I guess I'm curious how this issue is handled by others in the community providing DNN as a solution to their clients.

Hold the phone!!! Erik.....Did I understand you correctly? Did you say that as long as the above license text and the copyright notice are included in the "Source Code", that is sufficient for all practical purposes to meet the requirements of the license??? No inclusion of the license text and the copyright notice are required from the public display via hyperlink or otherwise??? hmmm
