Yeah I had tried that too, but in my case it was not successful. Might help someone else though.

I just updated to 4.4.0 and can't log in either. I copied the key over from the old web.config file and still can't log in.
When I opened the user table in SQL manager the password column is not there. Does the newer version move the passwords?  Any suggestion how to resolve the log in problem for 4.4.0?

im having the same problem...just upgraded from 4.x to 4.4 and now cannot login...with any accounts. this is a real bummer...wierd thing is everything on the site works cept for loging in...

make sure, you keep your encrytion keys from previously used web.config!
