Ok, I was able to set this up so that some products wont get charged shipping.

As for the tax issue...anyone know how to add a taxable/not taxable dropdown list or check box to the product settings? I'm willing to pay for this as I will not have the expertise to do it unless it is something more simple than I would suspect.

Hi Joanie,

For the shipping, looks on the form "Store Info" of the Store Admin module. Maximize the "Shipping Administration" section and add a line with this values : Description (any text), Min. Weight 0, Max. Weight 9999, Cost 0. This will add a null shipping cost to any order. It is probably what you did?

For the Tax, it's one the same form. Maxime the "Tax Administration section" and uncheck "Enable Tax".

Thanks Gilles, Yep...that's what I did for the shipping, so that's ok now.

However, I need to be able to turn the tax off for some items and off for other items in our shopping cart. For example, we charge sales tax for products, but dont charge sales tax for services. I want to be able to add a way to purchase services through the cart, but can't have it calculate tax. The check box you referred to affects 'all' products in the store.

OK, I had not understood your problem!

Currently, you cannot do that. The tax provider should be modified. It is not an easy task. I work on this problem in this moment. In fact, in France we have several rates of taxes according to the type of product. For that, it is necessary to be able to define a rate by product.
