Hi all,

I'm experiencing a problem when I load my DotNetNuke site initially.  On accessing the home page www.edendorkgac.com/dotnetnuke/default.aspx for the first time, I am presented with a server error.  However, when I refresh the page, the site appears and I am able to log in.  It would seem that there is something amiss with the authentication settings for the site.  When I go to the Admin > Authentication page, I receive the following error message:

The default authentication provider specified in web.config is not configured properly. Authentication settings are disabled.

Can anyone help?

Settings:

DotNetNuke:            Version 3.3.7

Host Site:                Write Permissions Enabled

ASP.net Version:      1.1

Web.config settings:

<section name="authentication" type="DotNetNuke.Framework.Providers.ProviderConfigurationHandler, DotNetNuke" />

<!-- add name="Authentication" type="DotNetNuke.HttpModules.AuthenticationModule, DotNetNuke.HttpModules.Authentication" / -->

This has been commented out but when I un-comment it, I am unable to log into the site.

<!-- Forms or Windows authentication -->

              <authentication mode="Forms">

                     <forms name=".DOTNETNUKE" protection="All" timeout="60" />

              </authentication>

<authentication defaultProvider="ADSIAuthenticationProvider">

                     <providers>

                           <clear />

                           <add name="ADSIAuthenticationProvider"

                                  type="DotNetNuke.Security.Authentication.ADSIProvider, DotNetNuke.Authentication.ADSIProvider"

                                  providerPath="~\Providers\AuthenticationProviders\ADSIProvider\" />

                     </providers>

              </authentication>

Thanks,

Sean

Are you having the same problem logging in on the intranet as you are on the internet? I just visited your site and got the Windows login prompt which makes me think you've uncommented the line <!-- add name="Authentication" type="DotNetNuke.HttpModules.AuthenticationModule, DotNetNuke.HttpModules.Authentication" / --> in your web.config. That's not a problem except when someone tries to visit your site via the internet. The first time they hit the page it asks for login credentials and when the user clicks on Cancel they get the server error. Upon refresh DNN/IIS gives them anonymous access. Unfortunately if you want DNN to authenticate users against your Active Directory and also still allow access outside your intranet you have to run in mixed mode (leave the <add name="Authentication"..... commented).

Check in the folder <dnnroot>/portals/_default/EventQueue, and see if there are any files in there that begin with Application_Start, if there are then you need to delete them to stop this from happening.

The histry on that problem is in this thread.

Thanks for your reply, John.

You are quite right - I had uncommented the
<add name="Authentication"…/> section of the web.config file.  Now that I have un-commented it, I find myself unable to log in as none of my passwords work any longer.

Oh well, I’ll just have to clear out the database and re-install DNN bearing in mind the information contained in that thread - re-installing it is not not that big of a deal.

Will let you know how I get on.

And thanks again,

Sean

Just re-installed the site and the problem seems to have resolved itself.  I will let you know if it recurrs.

Thanks for the help,

Sean
